Through painting, sculpture and installation, Mirena Kim explores the very human need to recognize and name the human form in every environment. Kim works to expand the fleeting moments between seeing, recognizing and naming through abstraction and color. Lightning-quick judgements give away to a slower read and a deeper relationship between viewing and making.

As an undergraduate, Mirena Kim used the emotional qualities of gesture to create performance and dance pieces. Later, working in graphic design led Kim to value the communicative properties of type, layout and color.

While pursuing her MFA at Otis College of Art and Design (2020), Kim found that, with abstraction as the ultimate tool, how bodies are named (by race, gender, age, etc.) could be re-examined, deconstructed, returned/restored to her process.

Mirena Kim lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
